President's Report
From PETER COLLING
Howdy all,
My apologies that I did not give a report last newsletter - it has been pretty hectic up here in the mountains and time sure gets away on you.

Plans for the State Show are well in hand and it is shaping up to be a great show - judges, sponsors, buckles, prizes, prizemoney - all looking good. I would like to thank all the committee who are working so hard to make an enjoyable show for everyone. Also some of our 'imported' helpers such as Tania Mather, who has done such a lot of work sourcing an international judge for us.

Finally I would like to wish everyone luck at the Paint Nationals and I look forward to catching up with a few of you while in Dubbo

Good Luck,
Peter Colling
Secretary's Report
From DIANA PERKINS
Hi everyone,
I hope that everyone is having a successful show season and imagine that many are preparing for the Nationals, wishing you all the best of luck and hope you have an enjoyable time.

It doesn't seem that long ago since I submitted my report for the last newsletter, time flies and it won't be that long before the State show will be here. Plans are moving along for the show, but there is still plenty to do. It is the start of an exciting new era for the NSWPHA and we are looking forward to a successful State show with the support of our members.

Best wishes,
Di Perkins
Highpoint Report
From MEL HOGAN
Well the show season is now in full swing and the points are beginning to roll in. There a few new names nominating in the highpoints and I welcome you aboard.

I have been doing some spot checks on show points and any incorrect points will be omitted from the highpoint tally, so be sure your points are filled out correctly. I will send out a letter to advise if I find a discrepancy in your points, notifying you which points will not be included in the pointscore tally.

And once again for any members out there who are unsure how the highpoints work please call me on 0407 010 293 or email to melanie.hogan@natfoods.com.au

Happy showing
Mel Hogan

A Thank You!
After trying hard to get into the show ring in Sydney with my Quarter Horse for 3 years without success, we packed up and moved to Port Macquarie with work and there I met the BEST Bunch of horse people I have ever come across!!!! And into the "Circle K" Paint Horse scene I dived (or loped).

They said we'd be off to Dubbo which I didn't really believe, but here we are 8 months down the track with my confidence built beyond my expectations (with my new paint yearling) and sure enough we're all paid up and off to Dubbo!!!!!

So I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU for taking me on and helping me out in a way that NO OTHER Trainer/Breeder would have. I go to my horse at their property as if it was my own (almost) I have never felt so welcome or comfortable. And I truly believe this is how it should be!!! So without further rambling THANK YOU for EVERYTHING you have done and I can't wait for Dubbo and of course the State show in Sydney!!!!! Kathleen & Neville Jones - The Fairest people I have ever met I am proud to know you!!

The excitement over

Recently, it has been reported in the British press about the first broken coloured thoroughbred born in the UK.

UK Daily Mail - 13th March 2007
First 'coloured' thoroughbred foal ever born in Britain

Bounding around his paddock and even offering a playful skip in front of the onlooking camera, it seems that this foal is all too aware that he is something special.

His striking, patchy appearance means that Ben has officially become the first ever "coloured" thoroughbred foal to be born in Britain.

The coloured colt, is the first foal from the famous stallion 'I Was Framed', which made the headlines last year as the first thoroughbred to be registered as a coloured horse by Weatherbys, who officially register the animals.

Horsetalk magazine
UK's first coloured thoroughbred foal born

Britain's first coloured full thoroughbred foal has been born, at West Down Stud in Devon.

"Ben" is the first foal of the US-imported stallion I Was Framed, who was the first thoroughbred to be registered as coloured with Weatherby's.

Ben is registered as a bay overo and was born on February 26. He is out of Facsimile, whose progeny are all winners, including Picot de Say who was a triple winner last year over 17 days.

Ben's owner, Shena Halliwell, said I Was Framed was sold to Ireland last year after covering nine thoroughbred mares in Britain. Halliwell has another mare due to I Was Framed in April.

The thoroughbred stud book has had very limited choices for describing the colour of the horse - basically there is black, brown, bay or chestnut.

It is likely in the past that broken coloured or even dilute thoroughbreds (palomino or buckskin) were described as chestnut or bay as there were simply no other choices. So from the studbook records it is impossible to tell if or how many of these horses there were in the 300 + year history of thoroughbreds.

As well as the numerous thoroughbred 'sabino crop-outs' in Australia, there are a number of broken coloured thoroughbreds in the US. There is of course the suspicion that 'paint-blood' somehow got in to the US thoroughbreds through some dodgy breeding practices, but it is just as likely that it was there all the time as this late 18th century English painting perhaps demonstrates.

According to the Walker National Art Gallery in Liverpool, this painting, apparently of a coloured thoroughbred, is attributed to an artist named Sawrey Gilpin who died in 1806. Little else is known.
Given his breeding, Halliwell is excited about the young colt's future prospects on the racetrack and in the breeding shed. "He is a good, strong foal and very well put together. I have been breeding horses for nearly 20 years, and he is the boldest, cheekiest foal we've had! He has plenty of character," she says.

Ben's sire I Was Framed is by the black overo stallion Racey Remarque (Sonny's Solo Halo, by Halo). Halo sired Sunday Silence, the winner of the Preakness and Kentucky Derby and $US4,968,554. Racey Remarque died in 2003 after a paddock accident.
